In June, Ben & I had a a four day weekend. We decided to use this time for travel. We flew to Phuket after work for the first night & checked into a hotel near the ferry port. The next day we took the first ferry to Koh Phi Phi, you know, the place where Leo filmed “The Beach.”No big deal!
We stayed at a tiny resort called Tohko Beach. It was peaceful, isolated & served delicious food. What more could we want in a beach resort?
Oh, animal cuddles & beach hammocks of course! These handsome guys are Teddy & Leo. They live at Tohko Beach & offer complimentary cuddles to guests. Hanging out with them was the best!
Koh Phi Phi was awesome & we were so happy with the place we stayed. We got a little beach hut with a hammock on the porch overlooking the ocean. Everyday we were there we snorkeled & kayaked. The water was crystal clear & the corals were colorful enough to see from the surface of the water.
It was one of those beach trips where we played all day in the sun then went to bed early. No dressing up or spending hours fussing over my beach look. No fancy dinners or nights out at the bars. This was a beach trip to get in touch with nature & relax, my favorite kind.
We taste tested the menu twice over. I am not joking. We ordered everything on the menu & some of it twice. It was all delicious.
The owners & staff were really cool & laid back. On our last day, along with an Australian couple staying there, we hired their boat to take us to Maya Bay. There we snorkeled, checked out different beaches & eventually made our way over to “Monkey Beach.” I was surprised by the amount of boat traffic around those isolated islands. Not to mention the corals. We always think about the toll our tourism is taking on the environment. Although everything surrounding the now super famous Maya Bay is still beautiful, it is upsetting to think that so many people on so many boats are visiting it daily. I could see how, without regulations limiting the number of visitors & boats, the island could lose it’s natural beauty. Monkey beach was one tourist site that really made me think about this. These monkeys are FAT & way to familiar with human food. We watched as some of the monkeys opened oreos, licked the cream then sandwiched the cookie back together before eating. I can’t imagine this is good for them.
Despite these concerns, I still highly recommend visiting Koh Phi Phi. Most of it is peaceful, isolated & still perfectly untouched.
What is your favorite beach? Where should I go next in Thailand? Leave me your thoughts below!
I was in Phuket in April 1988 – Karon Beach was idyllic & unspoilt then despite its proximity to Patong. Bet it has all changed now! I love your photos of Koh Phi Phi – brings back memories 😊

Awesome photos! I went to Koh Samui a few years back and enjoyed every bit of it! Highlights would definitely be playing a few rounds of golf, quad biking and island hopping on a yacht!

That looks wonderful! I wish I could suggest a next destination but I’ve never traveled outside of North America and wouldn’t be much help at all.
Your pictures are amazing and how cute are those doggies?

If you decide to visit Thailand I highly recommend Phi Phi! Also, I haven’t travelled much in NA, yet. So any suggestions you have for travel there are welcome 🙂 Teddy and Leo, the doggies, were the cuddliest!
