After our day of driving the deserts & Joshua Tree, we stayed in Vegas for three nights. At this point in the trip, we had mostly been in sub-par roadside motels. For Vegas, we got ourselves a massive hotel room upstairs from a casino, of course. Ah, time to relax & maybe even wear make-up.
I had always wanted to go to Vegas since it seems to be such a cultural phenomenon of neon lights, all night drinking & lost inhibitions. It just seemed like a good time to cut loose & get caught up in it all. But wait a minute, that’s exactly how I would describe Korean night life. We had just completed three years living in Korea where the bars never close, cheap booze flow & public drunkenness is the norm. Oh, and flashing neon lights are part of the everyday experience. So, we really didn’t get swept up in Vegas nightlife like we thought we might.
Instead we relaxed, did a little shopping & attempting to play the slots. Mostly Mr. FGK would put $1 in the penny slots & milk it for as many free drinks as he could. He cashed out at $.04 once. We’re obviously not gamblers.
Our favorite thing in Vegas was the Neon Museum. If you visit Vegas, this is definitely worth an hour or two of your time. They’ve collected & preserved retired neon signs that are iconic to Vegas. If you visit at night, the signs are lit up. Check out some of my pics of the signs:
Next stop: The Grand Canyon & Meteor Crater!
