I have never been a tea drinker. Unusual for a southern girl, I know. I discovered coffee in my last year of college. Since then, I have had an undying love, & some might say, obsession with it. However, I am slowly coming around to the idea of tea.
While in Hong Kong, Mr. FGK ordered a London Fog Latte during one of my coffee runs. We made our way down to the bakery next to our hotel for our morning order of egg tarts & pineapple buns for breakfast. Then, as we had done each day, scurried to the front stoop of the nearest closed store in the shade & ate. Passersby probably thought this was strange. It was just what we did the first day & continued to do each day thereafter. I asked if I could have a sip of his London Fog, not having a clue what it was.
For clarification, now that I know, a London Fog is an Earl Grey tea latté. Earl Grey is black tea that tastes like oranges. And Mr. FGK let me have a sip of his. That was his mistake! My first ever taste of Earl Grey & I was blown away. I kept asking for more & taking larger & larger sips. As soon as we were home from our trip, I put Earl Grey tea on the grocery list & began to research what I could do with it.
So, for our tea party, we are having London Fog Lattés with Earl Grey Shortbread Cookies. A killer combination of smooth & creamy, citrusy & buttery flavors.
The first recipe is the London Fog Latté recipe. It falls in my “super easy” recipe category. I promise, if you are entertaining & want to make this for friends, it is as simple & easy as it gets.
London Fog Lattés
Ingredients:
- 1 Earl Grey Tea Bag
- 1/2 Cup Milk
- White sugar (optional)
Prepare the tea according to the instructions on the package. For mine, I usually boil one cup of water for one bag of tea & allow it to steep for 3-4 minutes. Discard the tea bag once it is finished steeping.
For the milk, a steamer is the preferred method for making a latté. However, if you do not have a steamer, simply heat the milk on the stove top. Be sure to stir constantly to avoid scorching. Once the milk is almost at a simmer, it is ready.
Pour the steamed milk in with the tea. Add a little sugar to taste. Enjoy!
Now, for the shortbread cookies. This recipe is just sweet enough with vanilla added to enhance the orange citrus taste of the tea. It makes 3 dozen so you might want to try this out for your next party. And it does pair beautifully with the lattés, but each of these recipes could stand fine on their own.
Enjoy & happy baking!
Earl Grey Shortbread Cookies
Ingredients:
- 3 Cups Flour
- 3 Cups Butter
- 1 Cup Powdered Sugar
- 3 Tablespoons Earl Grey Tea (3 bags)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Vanilla
Once the butter has softened, cream it in a mixing bowl. Add sugar & mix until well blended. Next add the flour 1 Cup at a time. Once all of the flour is incorporated into the dough, add the Earl Grey tea & vanilla. Mix thoroughly then ball the dough & wrap in saran wrap. Allow it to chill for 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 325° F/162° C & line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Once the dough has chilled, place it on a floured surface. Using a rolling pin that has been rubbed with flour, roll the dough out until it is 1/4 inch thick. Cut the cookies into desired shape & place on the cookie sheet. Bake for 12-15 minutes, careful not to brown the edges. Allow to cool on pan for 5 minutes before serving.
I want to come for the tea party!! Those cookies sound -delicious-.
